Transcribing a foreign driving licence to a Swiss licence category B
Important information

Dear Sir / Madam,
Concerning your application for transcribing a foreign driving licence to a Swiss licence, category B (motor vehicles up to a total weight of 3.5 t and max. 8 seats excluding the driver), we would like to give you following important information:

Passing a test drive

According to article 44, paragraph 1, of the decree of October 27, 1976 concerning the registration of persons and vehicles to the road traffic (VZV), you will have to pass a test drive, in order to obtain a Swiss driving licence. You will find the date for this test drive in the enclosed permit. The test drive will start at the Motorfahrzeug-Prüfstation beider Basel, Reinacherstrasse 40, 4142 Münchenstein, and will take around 40 minutes (driving time).

Required standard of the test vehicle

You will have to come for the test drive with a car or light motor vehicle up to a maximum of 3.5 t total weight. If the vehicle has a dead weight of less than 700 kg, the driving licence will be restricted to vehicles having a maximum of 800 kg dead weight. Moreover, the vehicle you will drive for the examination must be able to reach a speed of at least 80 km/h and be allowed to run on motorways. The vehicle must be roadworthy and correspond to the Swiss construction- and equipment regulations.

Failing the test

If you fail the test drive, your foreign driving licence will be invalidated. It is not possible to repeat the test. The invalidation of the foreign driving licence will be decreed by the police of the canton Basel-Landschaft. The fee amounts to CHF 200.

Unexcused absence from the test drive

If you do not turn up for the test drive without an excuse, the test drive will be regarded as failed according to article 24a, paragraph 3 VZV. The examination fee of CHF 120 is still due. In this case too, the police of the canton Basel-Landschaft will invalidate the foreign driving licence.

Taking driving lessons at a professional driving school The demands of a test drive are not to be underestimated. Therefore we highly recommend taking a few lessons with a driving instructor, who will complement your knowledge especially in respect of the Swiss highway code, conduct in traffic and technical driving knowledge.
You will obtain the Swiss driving licence, after having successfully passed the test drive.
